First Sonogram
We had the original sonogram at 20 weeks gestation that indicated the our baby has a congenital heart defect.Jenn's comments:
We woke up this particular morning full of excitement. We were going to find out the gender of our baby! We drove to American Radiology Services for our the ultrasound - the second ultrasound at this point (20 weeks). The first ultrasound was at 9 weeks. We could see our baby's heartbeat even then, which was truly amazing, and really drove home the fact that we were going to have a little one. So, for this 20 week ultrasound, the technician asked if we wanted to know the gender. We both said "yes", and just moments later, the technician said, "And it's a boy!" Apparently he wasn't shy about showing his little package. :-) We were thrilled. But that wouldn't last.
What was supposed to be a 20 minute ultrasound lasted an hour, because the technician had detected an abnormality with the baby's heart. Unfortunately, she didn't share this information with us while we were still at the clinic, but rather let us return to work. My OB/GYN, Dr. Watson, then called me at work to say, "There is a problem with the ultrasound. I need you to go some place private. I'll hold." Damian was on the other line at the moment, and I had to tell him that there was a problem with the ultrasound, but I knew nothing more, and I'd have to call him back. I clicked back to Dr. Watson, and she told me that the baby's heart was abnormal. She then said we would need to have a level 2 ultrasound at UMD with a perinatologist. I asked her for the bottom line - what did this mean? She said that some congenital heart defects can be fixed with surgery, but some can't be fixed, and our baby could die. I hung up the phone and burst into tears. Just minutes before I'd been basking in the happiness of knowing I was going to have a baby boy, and now I was terrified that my little one wouldn't even live. I called Damian back immediately, told him what was happening, and asked him to please pick me up and take me to Baltimore, as I was in no shape to drive. He picked me up, and we went to UMD together.
