Our appointment with the GI specialist - Dr. Patricia DeRusso

This morning I packed Corey up and headed back to Hopkins. He was actually really, really good. Mr. Flirty Pants smiled at all the receptionists, the nurses, Dr. DeRusso, the ladies in the hallway, the ladies in the elevator - any lady he saw got a big whopper of a smile today. There was no real poking today, so perhaps this is part of the reason for his fine humor.

We started with Corey's vitals. His blood pressure is 93/46, which is very good. This was actually a bit of a relief for me, because we've had him on Captopril all this time without a blood pressure check. He weighed in at 18 lbs 4 oz, for a 4 oz weight gain over the past two weeks. However, this was a different scale than the usual one, and he tends to weigh lighter on scales other than the pediatrician's, for whatever reason, so we aren't concerned. Also, his height was 28.5 inches, so he's still a tall guy.

Dr. DeRusso then examined Corey, and said that he looks great/all his organs feel fine (i.e., not enlarged or swollen). That's always good to hear! Then she took me back through Corey's eating history, right from day one. I talked her through the specifics, ending with the current situation. Which, as you all know, is that Corey will only eat when he's asleep. All efforts to offer him other solids are pretty much a total disaster as well. And Corey continues to vomit on a fairly regular basis.

After we discussed everything, Dr. DeRusso suggested changing from Zantac to Prevacid. She agrees with me, that Corey appears to have an oral aversion, based on my descriptions of his behavior. However, she says that he may still be suffering from some physical discomfort as well, and she wants to eliminate this before we move on the behavioral specialists. So, we will try the Prevacid, and then we will move on from there. We have a follow-up appointment in December, and she asked us to give a follow-up phone call in two weeks to see how he's responding to the Prevacid.

On a side note, while Corey and I were in the waiting room, we saw another boy baby. This little boy, Mitchel, was 6 months old, and he was locking his knees and standing like a champion. Corey was completely fascinated by baby Mitchel. When he saw Mitchel standing, Corey locked his legs and stood, stood, stood on my lap like it was his favorite thing to do. It was really a riot. Apparently Corey likes boy babies, but is terribly afraid of girl babies. He couldn't get enough of looking at Mitchel, but girl babies always make him cry. My shy guy! Or maybe he knows already that girls are trouble. :-) I nearly died of jealousy myself when Mitchel's mom handed him a six ounce bottle which Mitchel not only wolfed down but held all by himself! One day. Well, maybe with my next baby.
